Recent Impact Stories

Veg Donation

Sayap Africa Global is excited to announce an upcoming partnership with CoolVeg, founded by MIT D-Lab researcher Dr. Eric Verploegen. This collaboration will support the spread of clay pot coolers—an innovative, electricity-free solution pioneered by CoolVeg to help preserve fruits and vegetables through evaporative cooling.

Through hands-on training programs, this initiative aims to reduce food waste, improve nutrition, and strengthen food security in arid regions. In Mali, 98% of users reported less food waste, and 88% said their fruit and vegetable intake increased. Together with CoolVeg, we look forward to expanding this impactful technology through our chapters in Chad and Senegal, creating meaningful change across Africa.

BREAST CANCER Awareness and Prevention for AFRICAN WOMEN

SAYAP AFRICA, in partnership with Abdoulaye Diop and his research team, is launching an ambitious genetic study on cancer pathologies, focusing primarily on breast cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The goal is to identify hereditary pathogenic variants, such as COMT, BRCA1, and BRCA2 mutations, as well as other high-penetrance genes (such as TP53, PALB2, etc.), and to investigate the possible existence of a “founder effect” in West African populations. Through the rigorous collection of biological samples, genomic analyses, and clinical data, the team aims to establish a precise genetic profile of breast cancer in the African context, in order to develop more affordable and locally adapted screening tests.

This project, coordinated by two expert professors, Tiphaine and SLY, from Mount Sinai Hospital, is designed to bridge the gap between fundamental research and immediate clinical benefits for patients.

This unique initiative is part of a holistic approach centered on precision medicine. It combines tumor biopsies, family DNA sequencing, and genealogical analyses to track recurrent mutations specific to African women, such as the BRCA1 c.815_824dup duplication, already identified in Senegal with a high prevalence rate and a clear founder effect.

Supported by SAYAP AFRICA, this initiative aims not only to better understand the genetic mechanisms of breast cancer in Africa, but also to implement targeted prevention tools, raising awareness among at-risk populations and offering screening solutions adapted to local healthcare systems. An innovative project that could profoundly transform the fight against cancer among African women.
